‘Perfect Sweat’ Series Films in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark
July 5, 2019 -- Oslo, Norway -- The ‘Perfect Sweat’ series, in cooperation with Bray's Run Productions and Monster is currently filming at locations throughout Scandinavia. Robin Hansen-Tangen directs the episode.
The ‘Perfect Sweat’ is a new kind of travel show that explores ancient bathing traditions around the world.
In this episode host Mikkel Aaland, author of “Sweat,” returns to his ancestral home in Norway, and with the guidance of local co-host Lasse Eriksen, witnesses a 21st century transformation of sweat bathing practices, fueled by Scandinavian innovation. Eriksen recently oversaw the development and construction of Scandinavia’s first world-class theatre badstue (Norwegian sweat bath) at Farris Bad, which accommodates over 100 bathers.
“This is where my journey began, so long ago, in a small southern Norwegian town where my father was born,” says Aaland. “My father instilled in me at a young age the love of the badstue, which I later learned was similar to other sweat bathing customs found throughout the world.”
About the Series
Throughout recorded human history, the sweat bath has comforted, healed, and strengthened the social bonds between rich and poor, young and old, strong and the weak. In Finland and much of the modern world, the sweat bath is known as the sauna. But the sauna is only part of the picture. In the Middle East the sweat bath is known as the hammam, in Mexico the temescal, in Russia the banya, among Native Americans, it is known as the sweat lodge, and in Japan the kara-furo and mushi-buro. In Scandinavia, it is known by the name badstue, or bastu. Each bathing culture has its passionate devotees, unique history, rituals, and architecture.
Now, in this documentary series, sweat bathing guru Aaland teams up with local guides and retraces his steps in search of the perfect sweat. What he finds is an explosive rebirth of the ancient bathing traditions, traditions which include community rituals that are meant to revive the human spirit and change the world. So sit back and relax, and travel with us on this amazing and unique adventure!
